What to expect travelling SH1 between Christchurch & Picton

The NZTA have released a handy info guide in regards to travelling to Kaikoura this summer.  Are you aware of the opening hours and night closure areas of the SH1 north and south of Kaikoura? From 15 December, there will be more options for travel around the upper South Island. The alternate route (via state highways 63, 6, 65, 7, through Lewis Pass) is open 24/7. Both SHI north and south of Kaikoura will be open during daytime hours 7am – 8:30pm and closed at night for safety. Restricted Fire Season Declared From Saturday 9 Dec

Due to the warm weather, and dry as well as dangerous conditions, as of midnight Saturday 9th December a Restricted Fire Season will be declared for the Waimakariri District. This means fires cannot be lit in the open without a permit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). The restriction has also been declared for the Christchurch City (including Banks Pennisula), Selwyn District and the Hurunui District.
