Waimak residents are being asked for their input into rubbish collection services

Waimak residents can also put forward their opinion online via the WDC website.

The options appear to be the three below. They also appear to be a choice between a more economical option with some recycling, or a more ecological but more costly option with recycling as well as organics similar to the Christchurch City Council’s rubbish system. The options are outlaid below:

One Standard Service: the current WDC service

Fortnightly recycling bin and weekly WDC rubbish bags.

Current costs: $86 annual rate + $3 rubbish bags*.

Two Service Choices: offer of a bin for rubbish

Fortnightly Recycling Bin PLUS Weekly WDC rubbish bags OR Rubbish (red) bin.
Annual costs for recycling bin & bags: $86 annual rate + $3 rubbish bags*.
Annual costs for recycling bin & rubbish bin: annual rate varies from $221 to $281 depending on bin size choice**.

Four Service Choices: offer of bins for rubbish and organics

Fortnightly Recycling Bin PLUS Fortnightly WDC rubbish bags OR Rubbish (red) bin, AND/OR optional Organics (green) bin
Annual costs for recycling bin & bags: $86 annual rate + $3 rubbish bags*.
Annual costs for recycling bin, rubbish bin and/or optional organics bin: annual rate varies from $211 to $371 depending on bin type and size choices**.

In 2015 Waimakariri District Council Solid Waste Asset Manager Kitty Waghorn mentioned: “Our own audit in February revealed that a staggering amount of food is thrown away every week. This comes as no real surprise. We have known for some time that 39%  of the rubbish placed into kerbside collection bags is food waste, as is 17% of the rubbish in private collection bins.”

The WDC says in regards to consultation:

Council staff will be on the beat this weekend and next, allowing residents to talk rubbish with Council face to face. Consultation closes on 5pm, on Friday 11 August 2017.

Rounding up the consultation for the kerbside collection service, various drop in sessions are being held around the district with the first one kicking off at the Pegasus Community Centre this Saturday between 2pm and 4pm.

A range of flexible options with varying costs for a kerbside collection service are being presented and you can choose the bin sizes and service choices that would best suit your household. Staff will be available to talk through the options and answer any questions you may have.

With three weeks remaining of the consultation period, we want to hear from you about which service choice you would choose. Consultation closes at 5pm on Friday 11 August.
